The Process Of Design
If you are an artist, illustrator or designer, you should have this book in your library. It discusses the logic, reason, structure, and method to create from a blank sheet. The design theories explained in this book are those of Fred Griffin, Seattle design guru.

Color Management
Color management is the most important aspect of the digital work flow. If you are creating, viewing, approving
or proofing, color must be right. The color your designer specs should be the color everybody sees.
As well as producing a quality scan, this book will help you get a handle on how to effect change to your digital photos. Helps if you own Photoshop or Photoshop Elements but the information can be applied to any photo manipulation software.

I can't stress enough the need for a properly calibrated monitor. CRTs need to be calibrated every few weeks, LCDs can go longer but still need the treatment. Few people do and that's when the problems start. If your monitor is properly adjusted for color, that means you and your designer are looking at the same image. And that's where misunderstandings and problems end.
|
Shooting digital photos is just the start. Sooner or later you'll need to correct the color of your photo. And trust me, there is a lot to know. The "dummies" series of books is a popular, uncomplicated and inexpensive way to access information on this subject.
Don't forget about setting monitor calibration too (above).

If you have a passing interest in the graphic arts, the store of Pantone and the man that created it could hold a certain fascination. Not your normal winter, by-the-fireplace reading with your significant other, reading material but interesting none the less. |
I am asked all the time how to scan slides and negatives. If you need to supply your designer with the proper materials from your business archive, or simply wish to digitally whittle down your family's slide stack, this book will make you as close to an expert as you'll need. |
Once again, communicating and controlling color is of utmost importance. When working with your graphics professionals or even the local Kinkos/FedEx. The PMS standard is your basic tool.
This set is for CMYK color specification. |

This is a little deeper foray into color and its management. More technical (terminology of color, basic color theories
color calibration, behavioral effects of color, etc.), it does cover most of what you need to know about color. Highly recommended, CD included.

Software Tools
The simple facts: When creating, good software makes your life easier.
The package I use every day is Photoshop. I can construct, alter or correct whole worlds if need be. Notoriously deep, it can take years to master. For those camera buffs out there, Photoshop Elements is the "home" version of the what I use. Change contrast, color, saturation, levels and adding effects. It allows you to do a lot in a pared-down Photoshop-like interface. And, it's 550 bucks cheaper. |
OK video folks. All those cool commercials out there are usually created by Adobe Premiere. Here is the "home" version of that program. The Adobe interface is easy to use and the program itself is versatile. You can use Photoshop plug-ins for extra effects. I use this myself and like it a lot. You can bash out a pretty fair vid or DVD in a short amount of time. |

Bundle of the two packages at left. |
If you have to have the best. What the photo pros use for photo
editing.

Once again, what the photo pros use but this is an upgrade if you have a qualifying product, like on older version of Photoshop or another brand of photo editing software. |
Businesses should be converting to digital documents. The benefits are many. Reduce paper usage, file and search in seconds across networks available (or not) to every employee, distribute easily to interested parties. Acrobat documents can be locked to ensure integrity and are an excellent way to soft proof printed projects. |
Same package as at left but with more collaboration tools. Reduce paper usage, file and search in seconds across networks available (or not) to every employee, distribute easily to interested parties, collaboratively mark-up and notate. Acrobat documents can be locked to ensure integrity and are an excellent way to soft proof printed projects and more. |
This is the upgrade for Acrobat Pro
version. If you have an older, qualifying, version of Acrobat Pro, then just upgrade with this. |
Many people use Paintshop
Photo Pro in place of Photoshop. Value priced it has Photoshop capability and way more as far as features go. PSP is geared toward the amateur that needs artistic effects at the click of a button. Many effects that us graphic artists build in Photoshop are just a click away in PSP and that is handy. RAW camera support plus many other features to numerous to list here. A very viable alternative to Photoshop at a fraction of the price. |
If you are going to do Paintshop Pro, getting a reference to the features and how it generally works would be a good investment. I find that these books generally useful as they take a bit if a different angle on showing you the ins and outs of the software. |
